Task 07 · Read WX-HR-07 ~25 min

The employee lifecycle.

Every person who works somewhere moves through the same journey — from the first time they hear about the job to the day they leave. HR calls it the employee lifecycle, and there’s a job to do at every stage.

Every person who works somewhere moves through the same journey — from the first time they hear about the job to the day they leave. HR calls it the employee lifecycle, and there’s a job to do at every single stage.

Stage 01 · AttractBefore anyone applies

It starts long before a vacancy. Why would someone want to work here? Reputation, word of mouth, how the company shows up online — all of it decides who bothers to apply. A firm that treats people well gets better applicants without trying. That’s employer brand, and it’s built one good experience at a time.

Stage 02 · RecruitFrom applicant to offer

The active hiring bit: the advert goes out, applications come in, HR shortlists fairly against the role, interviews happen, references are checked, and an offer is made. Get this stage right and you start someone off on the right foot; rush it and you pay for the mistake for months.

Stage 03 · OnboardThe first days and weeks

A signed contract isn’t the finish line — it’s the start. Onboarding is the induction, the training, the systems, and the introductions that turn a nervous new starter into a confident team member. The first few weeks are when people quietly decide whether they’ll stay.

Stage 04 · DevelopHelping people get better

Once someone’s settled, the question becomes: how do they grow? Training, apprenticeships, appraisals, new responsibilities and clear routes up. At Watkins plenty of people have gone from apprentice to running their own jobs — that’s this stage working as it should.

Stage 05 · RetainKeeping good people

Losing a good person is expensive — you lose their skill, and you pay to hire and train a replacement. Retention is about the things that make people stay: fair pay, a decent culture, feeling valued, and support when life gets hard. Most of it isn’t about money.

Stage 06 · ExitWhen people leave

Eventually people move on — a new job, retirement, a change of direction. HR handles the leaver process: notice, handover, final pay, and often an exit interview to learn why they’re going. How you treat someone on the way out matters as much as how you treated them on the way in.

It’s a loop, not a line

A good leaver comes back — or sends someone. Treat people well right to the end and they recommend you, return later, or speak well of you for years. The exit of one person feeds the “attract” stage for the next. That’s why HR cares about the whole circle, not just the hiring bit.

So…Why think in a lifecycle?

Because problems in one stage show up in another. Weak onboarding creates early leavers; no development kills retention; a bad exit damages your brand. Seeing the whole journey is how HR spots what’s really going on.

Followed the whole journey?
