Task 02 · Read WX-EST-02 ~20 min

What estimators do.

Estimators are the reason there’s any work to do at all. Before a single pipe is laid, someone turns a pile of drawings into a price — and wins the job against everyone else pricing the same thing.

Estimators are the reason there’s any work to do at all. Before a single pipe is laid, someone has to turn a pile of drawings into a price — and win the job against everyone else pricing the very same thing. Here’s that job.

01 · Read the jobUnderstand what’s being asked

First you work out what the job actually involves — from the drawings, the specification and the scope (what’s included, and just as importantly, what isn’t). Miss something here and your whole price is wrong.

02 · Take-offMeasure the quantities

Take-off is measuring how much of everything the job needs — metres of pipe, number of radiators, hours of labour — straight from the drawings. It’s careful, methodical work, and it’s the backbone of the price.

03 · Price it upMaterials, labour, plant

Now you put a cost against all of it: the materials, the labour to fit them, and any plant (machinery) needed. This is the raw cost of doing the work — before the business gets involved.

04 · The business bitsOverheads, margin & risk

On top of the raw cost go the overheads (the firm’s running costs), a margin (profit), preliminaries (the cost of running the site) and a contingency for the unknowns. Get this balance wrong and a good job turns into a loss-maker.

05 · The tenderSubmitting the bid

The finished price is packaged up as a tender — a formal bid — and submitted, usually against several other firms pricing the same job. Presentation and clarity matter: a good bid is easy to understand and easy to trust.

06 · Win or lose, learnThe feedback loop

Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. Good estimators always ask why — too high, too low, missed something? — and feed that back into the next price. Estimating gets sharper every time.

The estimator’s tightrope

Too high and you lose the job. Too low and you win it but lose money. The entire skill is being accurate — pricing it exactly right, so the firm wins work it can actually make a profit on. That’s harder, and more important, than it sounds.

So…Why it matters

Nothing else happens until the estimate is right. Every job on every site started as a number on an estimator’s screen — which makes it one of the most quietly powerful roles in the whole business.

Got the measure of it?
