Your mini-project.
Time to make something. You’ll take a small real space, measure it, and draw it up to scale in CAD — a proper plan drawing, just like the ones the team produces every day.

The mini-project brief
The taskMeasure a small real space — your own bedroom is perfect — and draw it up as a plan in CAD.
ScalePick a sensible scale (1:50 works well) and stick to it throughout.
ViewDraw it in plan view — looking straight down from above.
OutputOne tidy, scaled plan with a title block. Print it or save a PDF.
Hand inShow your buddy your drawing before the end of your placement.
TimeAround 90 minutes — ask your buddy if you’d like longer.
01 Your drawing must include
- The walls, drawn to scale
- The door — with its swing
- Any windows
- 3–4 pieces of furniture as blocks/symbols
- At least two real dimensions
- A title block: your name, the scale, the date
02 Design tips
- Measure twice — a wrong measurement wrecks everything
- Draw at real size, then set the scale to print
- Use layers: walls, furniture and text on their own
- Keep line types consistent
- Add a north arrow so people know the orientation
- Don’t over-clutter — clear beats busy
The real job, in miniature
Every drawing starts exactly here.
Measure, scale, lay it out, check — every drawing the team produces began just like this. Do it once and you’ll never look at a room the same way again. Prefer a proper Watkins brief? Ask your buddy for a small plant-room or bathroom layout to draw up instead.
Drawn it up?
Once you’ve measured, scaled and drawn your plan, show your buddy and mark this complete to add the stamp to your punchcard. Keep the file — it’s the first thing you’ve made in CAD.
